AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE

We received the call almost four months ago – three days after Charles had accepted his new job offer in North Carolina.

3

“It” had been hiding its cowardly self behind a mask of unassuming symptoms – waiting to jump out when we all least expected it. One of the few things in life that I literally hate had dared wrap its evil throughout the lung and back muscles of one of the dearest people in my life – THE true Proverbs 31 woman and someone I can only ever hope to emulate: my beautiful mother-in-law, Robin.

robin

When we received the news we were devastated… but Robin’s positive outlook on everything has been full of holiness; in fact, her very first words to me were “It’s not pretty, but this is His opportunity to shine!”  Throughout this entire battle she’s clung to that Truth with a unique sense of peace & courage that is to be envied.

Everyone needs a “Robin” in their lives; she’s a “Chapel Hill Celebrity” in so many ways & is beyond words incredible. She’s also the true picture of what it means to live life like our Creator calls us to; her immense love for others & life is contagious & she carries pure Joy wherever she goes. Robin lives & breathes Christ in all that she does & purposes to find the beauty in every single thing. If there were to be a photo next to Proverbs 31, Robin’s picture would absolutely be front & center.  Ask anybody and everybody she’s ever interacted with! I promise you it isn’t just me & my own opinion – it is the absolute truth.

I have struggled to find the right words to write about this for a while, but I’ve finally realized that no matter how many times I write & rewrite & edit & erase that nothing will be ever be “right” –  because nothing about cancer is ever “right” – ever. It’s been hard to watch Robin fight her battle against this evil disease… & I am reminded daily that life is unfair in so many ways. Despite this reminder, I’ve also come to fully understand the reality that perfect little blessings are scattered throughout all seasons – even those seasons full of dark & brewing storms. “God cares, cares right down to the last detail.” (James 5:11)

We have SUCH Hope in all of this! Hope that healing can and will be possible – Hope that Robin’s strength will be renewed & Hope that our Author knows what He’s doing even when it’s murky & confusing right now. Charles & I are grateful for following what we felt we needed to do in leaving NYC despite what our hearts wanted to do & we have certainly learned a whole lot about grown up life in a short period of time.

We are thankful for all of the love & support that has surrounded the Britt household & are confident that this little “storm” is merely something that will allow Him the “opportunity to shine” even brighter during this Christmas season.

A THANKFUL HEART

I have an entirely new appreciation for Thanksgiving this year –  obviously I’ve always been thankful, but for some reason, this year it seems extra special & more relevant! Enjoy today! Create beautiful memories with loved ones, laugh tons & cry happy tears at least once, eat lots of delicious things, rest well, & – if you dare to venture out during tomorrow’s Black Friday craziness- be careful!
Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

These are just a few of the (many!!!) things I am grateful for this Thanksgiving.

LIFE LATELY

Lately
Life Lately:
Charles has many meetings each week in Chapel Hill; lots of photography; helping manage & run things at Charles’ parents’ cute store; sampling menu items for said store; spending a lot of precious time with my incredible mother-in-law & fall!

We are experiencing a unique stage of life here in the Britt household… & by unique, I mean that any sense of normalcy or routine has become completely foreign to both of us.

We’ve been living in North Carolina for over two months & we still don’t have a place to call “our own”.  We are splitting our lives between two very different worlds every week- both of which happen to be in two of NC’s sweetest college towns.  One of our realms is in little Davidson & the other one is two hours away in Chapel Hill, where we have been spending three days of our week, every week to help Charles’ mom as she battles a new diagnosis (more on this soon). Oh & we don’t really have a place to call “our own” right now.. so there’s that, too.

Every ounce of how I thought I needed our lives to be has been completely shattered & I’ve had time to step back and completely reevaluate what is truly important. Even though 92% of our belongings are shoved into a little storage unit right now, I’m more content than I have ever been (not that I was ever not happy/content  – this is just a fuller understanding of what that word actually means). Living with less is deeply satisfying in so many ways & I’m finding that without any frivolous “needs”, I am able to concentrate fully on the here & the now.

Has it been difficult? Um, yes. And that’s an understatement! We miss NYC – last year on this day I was getting ready to move up there before Charles. I would love a home & to decorate for the holidays & to partake in our yearly traditions.  I am craving a routine. And, probably most of all, I really miss sweet time for community & relationships. BUT despite all of these desires – despite how different this season has been for us – I can rest in the truth that He clearly orchestrated our move & that there is a season for everything. It’s just that this season happens to be one of the harder ones. What’s funny though, is that it has also been one of the best in so many ways. Strange how those things work,  huh?

So, there you have it. That’s our life in a tiny nutshell: living in two worlds & out of suitcases for almost three months (with lots of photography & work days thrown in there too!) + having our faith stretched & pulled in ways it’s never been before – it’s been a crazy ride!

Happy Monday! Enjoy this short holiday week =)

BABY SAMUEL | NEWBORN SESSION

IMG_77512

Oh my word: newborn sessions. I really cannot put into words how much I love them; seeing those sweet little yawns & scrunchy faces slays me!  Baby Samuel (Sam) was less than a week old when I got to go hang out with him – and he was as sweet as can be. I can already tell that he’s going to be a laid back little guy. Oh, and Big Brother & Big Sister? Let’s just say that if there could be an award for “Best Older Siblings” that these two would win first prize! Both were over the top sweet & helpful & so proud of their new baby brother! Aubrey – the big brother – couldn’t stop nuzzling & kissing Samuel’s little face as he slept – melt my heart!

(WARNING: If you do not have Baby Fever now – you will absolutely have it after seeing the following photos!)

NICK + BETHANY | MARRIED

“Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years;
(&) I’ll love you for a thousand more”

– Christina Perry  |  One Thousand Years –
IMG_6098
Nick & Bethany were married at the end of October and every single detail surrounding their Cordova (just outside of Memphis), Tennessee wedding was stunning; Bethany’s creativity & love for simplistic beauty alone would have been enough… but add the elements of fall in Tennessee (think perfect colors, crisp air & clear skies) the couple’s rich love for one another, and one of the world’s most beautiful brides  into the mix & it was the beyond perfect!

Bethany and I were roommates at a camp during the summer of 2006 & became instant friends. I am fairly quiet and introverted, but Bethany & I bonded quickly (after pulling an all-nighter to write a song for the camp talent show… cute, I know) & she even came back to North Carolina with me after camp to spend a few weeks with me & my family. We kept in touch through the end of high school, but as it often goes, we lost touch during college; it was not until about a year ago that we reconnected via social media (thank you, Twitter & Facebook!). Soon after, Nick proposed & I was so excited when Bethany reached out asking if I would be interested in flying to Tennessee to capture their wedding day. It was so exciting that our path crossed again after so many years for such a special occasion!

Nick & Bethany’s love story began in 2004, when Nick first noticed Bethany while she was visiting his church; after meeting her, Nick remembers looking at his best friend and stating: “I’m going to marry that girl some day.” After years of being best friends & dating on and off,  Bethany finally came to the realization that there was just no way getting around it: she had always, and would always, love Nick. Fortunately, Nick had never forgotten that night in 2004 and the promise he made to his best friend – he was still planning on marrying “that girl someday” & they were engaged soon after. So beautiful. So perfect.

I love all love stories, but stories like these ones are the ones make my heart overflow with happiness; it’s these very stories that remind me of the truth that God’s timing is always perfect when we sit back & allow Him to orchestrate. I know that Nick & Bethany purpose to serve & glorify God daily & because of this (and their absolute love for each other!) their marriage is going to flourish in so many ways…  I’m so grateful to have played a small part in documenting the beginning of the rest of their lives!
