“Forget about what’s happened;  don’t keep going over old history.
Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.
It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?
There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.”
(Isaiah 43:18-19)

Monday was the the 9th Annual Good Riddance day in NYC, and since I couldn’t be there to shred some of 2015 into tiny pieces of confetti, I figured there’s no better time than now to recap a little bit as we all prep to enter into a new year

This year was one of “cleaning house” after a whole lot of deserts and “rivers in the badlands” were thrown at us. Coming from several years of chaos (beginning with our move to NYC in December of 2012), 2015 was a time to hit the pause button and create a new normal. We had grown so accustomed to continuous stress and change, and when those things finally ended, we were left scrambling to find solid ground. Essentially, we had to relearn how to exist without a constant pump of cortisol and tension – and that was hard.  As a result of this relearning process, 2015 transformed into a year of ridding ourselves from anything non-life giving – be it relationships, habits or ways of thinking. It was bittersweet in many ways, but in the end, it was so good, freeing & necessary.

In the midst of ridding ourselves of the not so good, there was also a whole lot of goodness thrown into the mix:

  • Finally living in the same city again after a year and a half of split living!
  • Being freed from the constant stress of a looming lawsuit
  • Stepping away from real life for over a month & traveling (Italy, Croatia & Switzerland) as a part of our process in recovering, reconnecting and healing.
This was by far the best part of our entire year. We didn’t realize HOW necessary it was until we were there; we had loose plans & made decisions as we went along. It was the best way to travel (even for this type A human!) & I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. We’re already working on plans for another European adventure!
  • Our new company, Plott Hound! (!!!)
Before our summer adventure, an exciting opportunity was (almost literally) dropped into our laps and we began working on developing our new company (Plott Hound), which we launched in late August. Things since the launch have been so, so good… and such a welcome change after the insanity of 2014 & 2015! We may have been forced to let go of Merritt’s last spring, but in the midst of that vast loss & pain, God has given us something even better. Something we could’ve never even imagined or dreamed up on our own – finding beauty in ashes has never been experienced as deeply as it has been throughout this part of our story. So many great things are on the horizon and I’m looking forward to reveling exciting things for Plott Hound in the coming months.
(There were lots of other good and happy moments throughout the year (cruise with my family, a ton of photography & weddings, my brother’s graduation from high school, lots of traveling on weekends, etc.), but the above are the biggest & best moments!)
This year was a year of waiting and learning to be expectant for what is to come. Despite frustration as we grappled to make sense of so much loss and find solid ground again, it was exactly what was needed in order to prepare us for a whole lot of newness waiting just around the corner. I’m excited, expectant and so looking forward to 2016 & all that is to come! Love the words of the above verse- and I’m clinging to them as we say goodbye to the past two years & enter into a fresh, brand-new beautiful 2016!

“My whole heart will be yours forever
This is a beautiful start to a lifelong love letter”
-Sara Bareilles-

Jeff and Natalie. Wow, these two are beautiful, their love for each other was practically contagious and the light that night was to.die.for. Considering we had never met prior to this shoot, I felt like I had known them forever. After this session, I am SO looking forward to their spring wedding.

This session was from the end of August & is just the first of many sessions to catch up & post. Life has been amazingly happy and filled with so many good things: my “day job”, a new business, friends/fellowship, so much time running (training for a half!), and so much more. Compared to life last year at this time, things are about ten billion times better & my heart is full. More photos & weddings & happiness coming up soon!
